Shore Medical Aesthetics & Anti-Aging FAQs

Botox and Juvederm

Botox and Juvederm are prescription medications.  Like all medications, there can be side effects or adverse reactions.  It is advised to consult a physician prior to having any injection performed.  The physician should review your history, determine if you are a good candidate and explain the risks of the procedure.

With Botox results are usually noticed in 3-7 days but it can vary from patient to patient.  Juvederm results can be noticed immediately after the injections.

Botox and Juvederm are temporary.  Botox lasts about 6 months but it is advised to re-consult your physician after about 3-4 months.  Juvederm lasts about 1 year but a follow up visit is recommended after about 6 months.  Voluma, on the other hand, can last up to 2 years but re-evaluation should be performed yearly.

In New York, Botox and Juvederm can legally be administered by a qualified licensed physician.  Registered nurses or physician assistants employed by a medical practice can also administer Botox and Juvederm if the patient is examined by a physician.  Nurse practioners credentialed to practice medicine can administer Botox and Juvederm.  However, dentists should not be performing Botox or Juvederm injections.

In New York, physicians are prohibited from advertising or selling Botox or Juvederm on Groupon.  Furthermore, the authenticity of the products and reputability of the injector should be questioned.   Expired or diluted product should be of concern.

Paying for Botox by the unit is most favored because the actual amount of Botox administered and the location of the injection sites are disclosed to the patient.  This provides for a more personalized and interactive experience.

Laser, Botox and Juvederm all have different mechanisms of action and should be used in conjunction with each other in order to obtain the best results.

Yes, if the laser treatments and Botox or Juvederm injections are in different areas.  It recommended to wait at least 10-14 days after Botox or Juvederm before having laser treatments in the same area.  The reverse also holds true.

Laser Skin Treatments

In New York, a qualified licensed physician can perform laser skin care treatments.  Other healthcare providers employed by a medical practice can administer laser treatments if the patient is examined by a physician.  Estheticians with a New York Appearance Enhancement license can perform laser hair removal.

It is recommended to avoid tanning and sun exposure for at least 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after any laser treatment to avoid damaging the skin.

Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peels

Retinol and tretinion should be stopped about 7 days prior to microdermabrasion, chemical peel or laser treatments.  Accutane or isotretinion should be stopped 6-12 months prior.

CoolSculpting

Coolsculpting uses a process called cryolipolysis which is the medical term for destroying fat cells by freezing. The body naturally metabolizes the dead fat cells resulting a 20-25 % fat reduction in the targeted area.

The Coolsculpting procedure involves no surgery, no needles and no downtime. Prior to your treatment you should be evaluated by a physician. On the treatment day, a gel pad will be placed on the treatment area and then the vacuum applicator will be applied. The vacuum applicator will gently pull the targeted area towards the cooling panels and controlled cooling will begin. A typical treatment lasts between 35 and 75 minutes depending on the applicator used. After the treatment, the applicator will be removed and the area will be massaged for about 2 minutes.

When the cooling process is initiated, you will most likely feel an intense cold that will lessen after a few minutes.  There can also be a slight pulling or pinching sensation before the area becomes numb.  Most patients enjoy reading, listening to music or napping as the treatment continues.  After the applicator is removed, a massage will be performed that can be uncomfortable but is necessary for optimal results.

Common side effects include tingling, stinging, tenderness, swelling and sensitivity.  These side effects are temporary and usually resolved within several days.  Coolsculpting has no downtime and most patients return to their normal daily activity immediately following the procedure.
